The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
