Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests show the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
A senior representative said the vandalism made him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
